Why Do I Need This Exam?
Your PET/CT exam results may have a major impact on your physician's diagnosis of a potential health problem - and, should
a disease be detected, how your return to health is managed.
A PET/CT study not only helps your physician diagnose a problem, it also helps your physician predict the likely outcome of various therapeutic alternatives, pinpoint the best approach to treatment, and monitor your progress. If you are not responding as well as expected, you can be switched to a more effective therapy immediately. Just ask your physician what he or she hopes to learn from your PET/CT exam.
What Will the PET/CT Experience be Like?
Your blood sugar level will be assessed by a finger stick prior to the procedure since high levels will interfere with the PET exam. After reviewing your history and any prior exam, then you will receive the PET agent injection via an IV. For most studies, you will have to wait for the PET agent to distribute itself - typically 30 minutes to an hour. You will be in a quiet room resting without physical stimulation and encouraged not to speak since any activity will promote localization of the PET agent to those areas. You will lie on a comfortable table that moves slowly through the ring-like PET/CT scanner as it acquires the information it needs to generate diagnostic images. You will need to lie very still, because movement can interfere with the results. You should not feel a thing during the scan, which can last from 15 to 60 minutes.
About Your PET/CT Exam
Please follow these special instructions:- Do not eat or drink anything other than water for 4-8 hours before your exam because it could interfere with the results; do not even chew gum.
- If you take medications, drink only enough plain water to swallow them.
- If you have been advised not to take your medications on an empty stomach, eat nothing more than a few soda crackers within 4-6 hours of your exam.
- No caffeine, sugar, tobacco or heavy exercise for 24 hours prior to the exam.
- Wear loose clothing such as sweats, with no buckles or metal components.
- If you are diabetic, let us know ahead of time so we can work with your physician to determine the safest possible way for you to prepare for your exam.
- If you feel feverish, please call this to our attention.
How Long Does All This Take?
Your exam procedure will vary depending on the disease we are investigating and what we discover along the way. Plan to spend
two to three hours with us.
What happens After The Exam?
You may leave as soon as the scan is complete. Unless you have received special instructions, you will be able to eat and drink immediately - drinking lots of fluids will help remove any of the PET agents that may still be in your system. In the meantime, we will begin preparing the results for review by our radiologists, and then by your physician, who will tell you what we have learned. Are There Risks Associated With PET/CT?
A PET/CT study is similar to many other diagnostic procedures, such as MRI, CT and Nuclear Medicine. Although the radiation you receive is different, it is roughly equivalent to what you would receive from other diagnostic imaging exams such as CT or a 2 view chest X-ray. Radioactive tracers used in PET do not remain in your system long, so there is no reason to avoid interacting with other people once you leave the facility. As an extra precaution, wait a few hours before getting too close to an infant, or anyone who is pregnant. This is a PET/CT scanner. The scanning procedure can take 15 minutes to an hour. The scanner never comes into contact with your body and is brightly lit inside.Consult your physician with any additional questions or concerns.
