Quality Improvements (QI)

The evolution of Quality Improvements (QI) in the United States healthcare system has been moved from backstage to a leading role by public demand. Managed care increasingly demanded proof of practice quality and the appropriate use of medical resources. Virtually every physician, administrator, technologist and nurse in every field of health care has participated in quality improvement programs in the past several years. While the terminology is constantly changing, many of the key principals of QI have long been accepted in health care institutions. In the radiology department, the goal to deliver efficient, high quality diagnostic imaging can not be accomplished without an effective QI program.

Quality means different things to different individuals. To some, it implies adherence to a predefined set of standards. To others, it means doing the right things right while maintaining a high level of service and customer satisfaction. QI looks proactively at how problems develop by seeking them out and analyzing them in an effort to find methods to prevent these problems from happening again. QI also continually strives to improve processes within an organization. The proper quality management system should have a program in place that continuously analyzes services and monitors performance. Ultimately, the effort to achieve quality must be a continuous activity within the radiology department.

QI has proven that care is enhanced and costs are lowered by constantly improving the way processes are done. Specific to radiology, quality of service can be defined as the performance of appropriate diagnostic or interventional imaging procedures conducted in a safe, expedient and caring manner combined with timely, reporting of accurate results. The key to quality in radiology is constant communication among physicians, technologists, patients and others. Strong medical direction, efficient support, fast and accurate information systems, outcomes data and advanced technology are vital to providing quality diagnostic imaging services.

Quality control is often used interchangeably with quality improvement, although they are quite different. Quality control looks for problems after a product has been produced and often assumes that a level or percentage of error is acceptable. In contrast, QI looks for opportunities to identify and prevent problems on an ongoing basis. QI attempts to solve minor problems on an ongoing basis. Every effort, defect, complaint or inefficiency provides an opportunity to improve service and the overall patient experience.

Fort Wayne Radiology has established an ongoing commitment to quality to eliminate existing problems and prevent the development of new ones. An effective QI program will be a cycle of continuous quality improvements (CQI). By embracing one or all of the concepts of QI and using the various methods by which they work, organizations can improve their services, as well as satisfy staff and customers. The basic principal behind quality is simple: Continually improved processes will result in improvements to the organization.
